1952 Jaguar C Type aluminium evocation By Gregson

Chassis number:

Registration number: 618XUM  Formerly XPX116F as per practical classics Article.

Built in 1999 by John Gregson 's company Classic English Racing Autos Ltd which became Proteus.  This car has a full aluminium body & an interior very close to the originals.  The body is of hand rolled 1.6mm Aluminium sheet, 11 pieces forming the rear section & 17 for the front end.  John Advised limited rolling of the sheets which gives a genuine period look of racing C types.  The car is fitted with only one door as per the originals.  The body is etch primed & then twin pack finished in British Racing Green.

The car was completed 19 years ago & has had a chance during that time to acquire a pleasant patina giving it the feel of an original.  The green paint has the rivets visible through it in all the correct spots.  The body has a few minor dings & undulations again adding to the authentic look & feel of the car.  Parked in Jermyn St Several people stopped to look & assumed it was an original including a period Bugatti owner.

Under the bonnet is a 3.4 litre engine equipped with triple Webber Carburettors.  The car has an overdrive unit adding legs to an already long legged gear box.  The overdrive has the effect of making the speedometer read slow so at 120MPH one is actually travelling at 135 MPH.  You have been warned!  The exhaust sytem again follows period Jaguar practice: A pair of manifolds  with three short primary branches feeding individual down pipes into a side exiting silencer.

The interior period correct style seats are covered with dark green leather as are various other parts of the cockpit area.  Dark green carpets complete the ensemble.  A row of light switches & the overdrive switch are fitted to the passenger side of the dash.  There is also a passenger grab rail otherwise known as the "Oh my god" handle.

Clients looking for shiny perfection should Look at the Hofmann's lovely Proteus cars being currently produced.  People looking for a patinated original feeling & sounding car would do well to come & have a look at this one.  This is a fast visceral car & perfect for B road blasts down to Goodwood or for that matter LeMans.
